Paris, France. 9am

It was strange to be back.

Josef walked into Paris, through the Nazi checkpoint, and stared at a city that seemed to have changed beyond recognition. Was this really the place he had called home for so many years? It seemed unfamiliar, alien.

He noticed the numerous grey uniforms all about and the German accents that grated on the ears. Surprisingly, the ordinary citizens of Paris did not seem as cowed as he had feared. They went about their business as though all was normal and ordinary. A few kept their heads down and walked on the opposite side of the road to the Germans, but otherwise no was paying attention to the occupiers. Josef decided it was best to follow suit and not look like a provincial who had just arrived. He had to accept this was Paris now.

They took the metro to the city centre. Josef noted the new posters on the walls that warned people to be aware of dissidents and those that would disrupt the Nazi war machine. Veiled threats circulated in the text and left a bitter taste in the mouth. Some posters offered monetary rewards for those who informed the Gestapo about a suspected spy. It made Josef feel a little sick to imagine some of his fellow Frenchmen – or women – taking up such an offer. He was not naïve; there were those who could not resist such a temptation.

On the streets again, Josef noted the signs in shops that apologised for being unable to obtain certain goods. Exotic fruit was particularly hard to come by, but also silk stockings, chocolate and good wine. Other notices reminded customers to bring in their identity cards when they were shopping. Then there were the horrid posters that declared in harsh words that no Jews would be served in a certain shop. Josef felt his stomach knot, but had he expected anything less?

They finally came to a halt near one of the struts of the Eiffel Tower. There were German guards here too. The tower bore a large Nazi flag and had been cordoned off to prevent anyone using it maliciously, for instance to signal to British planes during an air raid. Josef thought that was a case of paranoia going a step too far, but what did he know?

“So, we need to find this gymnasium first?” Benoit stated as they halted just before the barbed wire that prevented access to the tower. “You know, I always wanted to see this.”

“It looks better when it is not ornamented by Nazis,” Josef said sourly. “And, yes, we need to know which gymnasium, but I have a hunch it will be the biggest one in Paris. It is the one where some of our athletes trained for the last Olympic Games.”

Benoit huffed.

“The one in Berlin,” he muttered. “Well, we didn’t know then.”

“We did know,” Josef replied. “In any case, I know where that one is, and I can get us there easily. Shall we try
